Although this behaviour seems insane to you or I there is method in your cats madness, as Sarah Heath, vet, feline behaviouralist and author explains:
"The cat's instinct is to seek out running water rather than still water in order to ensure that the water is fresh and to avoid the risk of drinking from stagnant water supplies"
She also adds another reason cats may choose alternative water sources that:
"When owners are constantly replenishing water bowls there is a theory that the high levels of chemicals in some domestic water supplies may be the problem. If the water is allowed to settle then the effects of the chemicals on the taste of the water may be lessened but constant replenishing to ensure a fresh water supply may mean that the water is always tainted from the cat's perspective."
You and I know that the water in the bowl is safe but your cat doesn't and if that stops it from drinking adequate amounts it can make a cat that is susceptible to urinary problems much worse.
